It's Summer!

It's summer, and we are busy doing some summer-y things, and some not so summer-y things.

A few days ago we traveled with some friends up to Reddish Knob, the highest point in the Allegheny Mountains.  It was quite a drive, but it had quite a  view.  Unfortunately, it was a hazy day, so we couldn't see as much as we might have liked.  We packed food and a little grill and grilled turkey burgers there on the top of the mountain.  We would have had smores except we forgot the graham crackers.  We roasted marshmallows anyways.  Ted and I had brought coat hangers on which to roast the marshmallows, and believe it or not the 4 people with us had never heard of such a thing!!  They had only ever roasted on sticks!   I felt like I was in a parallel universe or something!  While on the mountain, we encountered some other JMU folks who we knew which was very random, but quite fun!  We plan to go back soon, maybe this week!

I am on my week-long vacation before summer school starts up next week.  I've been trying to relax and get our house cleaned!  Of course, I have been watching a lot of online TV, including I finished all 4 seasons of LOST and now I don't know what to do with myself!  I was addicted!

I've been doing quite a bit of reading.  I am working my way through the Anne of Green Gables novel series which I enjoyed as a child, but enjoy even more now.  That's my bedtime reading.  My downstairs daytime reading has been Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.  I am on book 3, and I am so entertained by these books!

I've spent a good deal of time this past week working on HW for my Problem Solving and Lesson Study Class.  Most of the class is a do on your own time type thing, and we just have to check in online with our study groups occasionally.  The HW so far has been entertaining.  I have to solve logic based problems similar to this one:  Our famous mango problem:

4 men go out picking mangoes.  They finish, and before they count the mangoes they all fall asleep and take a nap.  The first man wakes up, and is very hungry and eats more than his share, 1/3 of the mangoes.  Then he goes back to sleep.  The second man wakes up and eats 1/3 of the mangoes there.  Then he goes back to sleep.  The third man wakes up and eats 1/3 of the mangoes there and he goes back to sleep.  The only honest man, the 4th man, wakes up and eats 1/4 of the mangoes and goes back to sleep.  When they all wake up, there are 6 mangoes left.  How many mangoes did the men start with?

Chew on that one!  :)

Anyhow, I have lots of problems like those to work on.  And, I also bought study books to begin studying for the Math Praxis II.  If I can take (and PASS) the Praxis II, I will be certified k-12 in mathematics education in Virginia, which would open up more teaching possibilities for me.   Right now, I cannot teach Algebra or Geometry which are offered at the middle school level to our gifted students.  I would love to be able to teach those courses.  Anyhow, the test is a beast, so pray for me.

Yesterday we went to Emily's parents house to celebrate her graduation, and we had fun with way too much food!!!  Then we spent last night at a hotel in DC near Dulles airport so we could pick up Kirk from the airport today!  I am also meeting my cousin, Lacey, for dinner today!

That's all for now!  I'll update more later on Kirk's visit, etc.

Much Love,

Dana

Answer to the problem: they had a whole bunch of mangos and the three dishonest men probably got the runs from eating so much fresh fruit!

I love reading your blogs!
